Road assistant: a social programme now fully consolidated in Madrid and Barcelona

The Road Assistant mobility programme continues to reap success in both capitals since the signing of the agreements between the Abertis Foundation, the Barcelona and Madrid city councils, the Catalan Down’s Syndrome Foundation and Down Madrid.

This initiative is designed to achieve a twofold aim: to improve mobility in the area near schools and to integrate young people with Down’s syndrome and intellectual disabilities into the workplace.

After receiving specific training, the road assistants observe and collect information on the mobility habits of parents and students when entering and leaving the school, whether pedestrians or drivers. This information is shared with the urban guard and the Madrid municipal police so the conclusions can be conveyed to the students and their families.

Seven schools are currently taking part in the initiative, four in Barcelona and three in Madrid. Every day a total of 14 road assistants are responsible for ensuring the safety of schoolchildren in the areas around their schools.
