Tiredness and excess speed, the target of road safety actions in France

In order to reduce traffic accidents involving motorway workers, Sanef launched a multichannel campaign to raise awareness among drivers of the need to moderate their speed and be particularly alert to vehicles working on the motorway facilities, for the safety of all users.

Excess speed is still the cause of one out of every six accidents on the French motorway network, although the problem has declined considerably in the last 10 years. For this reason, starting in October 2017 Sanef focused its road safety activity on raising awareness of excess speed as one of the leading causes of road accidents.

Between June and October, Sanef launched an important multichannel campaign dedicated to loss of concentration as a high risk factor on the road. In 2016, falling asleep at the wheel was responsible for 26.5% of deaths on the road, and being distracted for 16.3%. These two factors combined –still underestimated by many drivers– are the cause of almost one out of every two fatal traffic accidents in France. Lack of concentration increases the risk of suffering a traffic accident eightfold.

In addition to the campaign, Sanef held two seminars in the rest areas in Vironvay (A13), Baie de Somme (A16) and Sommesous (A16) dedicated entirely to the risk of becoming distracted, in order to raise awareness among users of the need to make regular stops and detect any signs of fatigue behind the wheel.
